Despite Recent Modest Increase in Visits, Cross-Border Traffic Still Down From 2024
Southbound B.C.-plate trips to Washington rose 18% in May but remained 37% below 2024 levels, transportation data show.
- Southbound vehicle trips from Canada to Washington State increased slightly this year, yet remain far below 2024 levels across major border crossings including Peace Arch and Pacific Highway.
- When Statistics Canada reported a 9.5 per cent increase in Canadian-resident return trips this year, it suggested an easing of travel reluctance triggered when President Donald Trump launched a trade war and suggested Canada should become the 51st state.
- Overall, southbound trips at four crossings fell from 213,356 in 2024 to 113,997 in 2025, then partially recovered to 134,992 this year.
- Greater Langley Chamber CEO Cory Redekop attributes the increase to long-postponed family and business trips, though people remain "plugged into supporting local," shopping in local businesses rather than visiting American destinations.
- Resolving trade issues is vital to getting the relationship back on track, Redekop noted, because longstanding deep relationships with American people and businesses remain despite it being "distasteful how parts of that country have acted.
