World Cup fans to be allowed to bring rainbow flags for Egypt-Iran match
FIFA said the Stadium Code allows human-rights symbols, after Iran and Egypt asked organizers to bar LGBTQ+ support at the June 26 match.
FIFA confirmed Thursday that fans may bring rainbow flags to Friday's World Cup match between Egypt and Iran at Lumen Field in Seattle, rejecting both nations' federation objections to LGBTQ+ symbols.
Seattle's local World Cup organizing committee branded Friday's game a "Pride Match" earlier this year to coincide with annual celebrations, prompting objections from the Egyptian and Iranian football federations citing cultural values.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino told Swiss magazine Die Weltwoche in January that "there will be no 'Pride Match' at the World Cup," emphasizing celebrations are organized by external groups, not FIFA.
This marks a shift from the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where FIFA threatened yellow cards against captains planning to wear "OneLove" armbands, citing rules against political messaging.
Friday's match is critical for both teams' tournament advancement, while human rights groups note Iran and Egypt impose severe penalties on LGBTQ+ individuals, including potential imprisonment and fines.
