Democrats Say Citizenship Question Could Derail Census Test

On Thursday, Democrats warned the U.S. Census Bureau that including a citizenship question in the practice test for the 2030 census could deter immigrant participation.

The head count determines how many congressional seats and Electoral College votes each state gets and how federal funding is distributed annually, while the U.S. Census Bureau counts everyone living in the U.S. regardless of legal status.
Among methods being tested is using U.S. Postal Service workers, while Democrats warned acting Census Bureau Director George Cook and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick the plan risks taxpayer dollars; the Census Bureau and Commerce Department did not immediately respond.
