Demonstrators gather in Montreal to mark three-year anniversary of Oct. 7 attack
On Wednesday, October 7, 2026, communities worldwide marked the third anniversary of the Hamas-led attack on Israel, which killed around 1,200 people and resulted in 251 hostages taken on October 7, 2023.
Since the 2023 attack, Israel has launched a retaliatory campaign in Gaza that has killed more than 74,000 Palestinians, leaving families of victims grappling with deep, lasting trauma.
Nova Music Festival survivors Eliya Cohen and Ziv Abud shared their survival story in Boston, while Raquel Look, mother of Montrealer Alexandre Look, described the anniversary weekend as "excruciatingly painful."
Sheffield City Council leader Coun Fran Belbin reaffirmed the council's support for a two-state solution, while Eliaz Luf, Israel's consul general in Montreal, emphasized remembrance's importance for the global community.
Rabbi Lisa Grushcow reflected that the attack fundamentally changed life for Jewish Montrealers, urging non-Jewish communities to foster mutual understanding and avoid polarization three years after this watershed moment.
