Democrat Haley Stevens endorses Michigan GOP Senate candidate Mike Rogers amid rift with Abdul El-Sayed
Stevens said El-Sayed told her to stay away from his campaign, then backed Rogers after a Detroit church appearance.
On Sunday, Representative Haley Stevens, D-Mich., endorsed Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers, a stunning break with her party just days before Election Day in a race that could determine Senate control.
A public feud with Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed prompted the split after he asked Stevens to stay away from campaign events; the two clashed over his rhetoric regarding Israel and an outside ad she called antisemitic.
Stevens appeared alongside Rogers at Detroit's Perfecting Church on Sunday, praising his support for Black-owned businesses after El-Sayed said she was "no longer welcome in his campaign." The church event was arranged at the last minute.
Democrats face a critical test in reuniting their coalition, as the endorsement threatens party support among Black and Jewish voters in the final days before Election Day.
Voters choose between Rogers and El-Sayed on Tuesday in a tight Michigan race that could determine which party controls the United States Senate.
