Jantar Mantar Is a Road, Not a Site, Says Delhi Police Chief
Police said the site was a public road and unsuitable for protests, citing a Home Ministry panel that named three alternative venues.
On Tuesday, Delhi Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar submitted an affidavit to the Supreme Court defending the denotification of Jantar Mantar, arguing the location is a "public road" rather than a designated protest site.
The decision followed a Ministry of Home Affairs committee report received in September, which found the area unsuitable due to emergency service constraints and public safety concerns.
Officials cited the presence of 78 foreign embassies, 99 central government offices, and more than 64,000 residents within a 4-kilometer radius, with a daily footfall of about 1.46 lakh people.
Authorities have designated three alternative venues for protests: Ramlila Maidan in Central Delhi, CBD Ground in East Delhi, and Burari Ground in North-West Delhi, balancing safety with dissent rights.
Commissioner Kumar argued that protesters cannot claim a fundamental right to a specific location, asserting that proximity to government seats is "redundant" in the era of digital technology and social media.
