Delhi High Court Grants 3-Day Interim Bail to Umar Khalid
On Thursday, May 21, 2026, the Delhi High Court granted bail to Salim Malik in the 2020 Delhi riots conspiracy case after he spent more than five years and 10 months in custody.
Justices Prathiba M. Singh and Madhu Jain granted relief based on parity with co-accused Mohd Saleem Khan and Shadab Ahmad, whom the Supreme Court released in January.
Prosecutors accused Malik of being a "mastermind" who delivered "provocative" speeches at protest sites and organized chakka jams, allegedly participating in the 2020 riots by carrying bricks and stones.
Meanwhile, co-accused Umar Khalid appealed to the High Court after a trial court rejected his interim bail plea, with his hearing scheduled for Friday, May 22, 2026.
Legal proceedings continue for remaining accused including Khalid and Sharjeel Imam, whom the Supreme Court described as "ideological drivers" and distinguished from other accused in the larger conspiracy.
