Venezuela Interim Leader Arrives In US For UNGA
Trump will meet Venezuela’s acting president as Washington eases sanctions and opens talks on oil and mineral access, officials said.
- Venezuela's interim President Delcy Rodriguez arrived in New York on Monday for the United Nations General Assembly, scheduled to meet President Donald Trump on Tuesday in their first encounter in more than 11 years.
- Ties between Washington and Caracas have shifted markedly since January, when U.S. forces captured former President Nicolas Maduro; Rodriguez has since cooperated with U.S. demands, including granting access to Venezuela's vast oil reserves.
- Trump announced an oil agreement in August giving a Washington-backed venture control of 17 oilfields, with the deal promising more than $100bn in investment and upwards of $209bn in tax revenue for Caracas, according to the administration.
- The State Department recently removed Venezuela from its list of countries that have "failed demonstrably" to fight drug trafficking, though the UN Fact-Finding Mission continues reporting 64 cases of torture after January.
- Rodriguez is scheduled to address the UN General Assembly on Thursday, September 24, as the session runs until September 28 under the theme "Restoring trust, managing transformation: a United Nations that delivers for all.
