Death toll rises to 5 in Nairobi collapsed building tragedy after 3 bodies are found
Police said 85% of debris has been cleared as investigators probe possible negligence and safety breaches in the project.
On Tuesday, The National Police Service recovered a second female body from the collapsed multi-storey building in Eastleigh, Nairobi, bringing the confirmed death toll to two as search-and-rescue operations continue.
The 18-story building collapsed on Oct 23 along 9th Street in Eastleigh, and Nairobi County Governor Johnson Sakaja confirmed the structure lacked necessary approvals and that renting out completed floors was illegal.
As of Nov 1, about 85 per cent of debris was cleared with 16 people still unaccounted for, as Nairobi North County Commissioner Simon Osumba said investigators used mobile phone data to establish nine missing individuals were at the building before collapse.
The Director of Public Prosecutions ordered the DCI to investigate potential negligence, omissions and misconduct by public officials and developers, addressing persistent concerns about weak enforcement of construction regulations in the capital.
