Dead Humpback Whale Reported Floating Off Vancouver Island Coast

DFO is working with First Nations to locate the carcass and said a necropsy will be done if the whale can be secured.

  • On Wednesday, June 3, Jason Clark spotted a decomposing humpback whale carcass floating near the Ucluelet Lighthouse while boating a few kilometres off the coast.
  • Clark reported the whale to Fisheries and Oceans , which received the report near Barkley Sound on Thursday, June 4, and is collaborating with Toquaht and Ucluelet First Nations to locate and secure the animal.
  • Challenging conditions including tides, wind and waves have hampered recovery efforts, the DFO said, though a necropsy will be conducted if possible to determine the cause of death.
  • As a co-ordinating member of the Marine Mammal Response Network, the department collaborates with multiple partners to support marine mammals in distress, evaluating each situation on a case-by-case basis.
  • Clark, who has been boating for 25 years, said he had never seen a dead humpback before; the public is encouraged to report whale incidents to the Marine Mammal Incident Hotline.
