Sheriff's Deputy, a Minnesota Graduate, Killed in Line of Duty in South Dakota
Court documents say the suspect opened fire as deputies tried to serve a mental-health hold, and Frank later died at a Sioux Falls hospital.
Minnehaha County Sheriff's Deputy Katherine Frank died Monday, Oct. 12, at a Sioux Falls hospital after being shot in the line of duty Friday, Oct. 9, during a mental health hold service.
Deputies attempted to serve a mental health hold on 39-year-old Brandon Oetken at his Keyrell Drive home; after roughly 30 minutes, Oetken retreated inside before opening fire on the officers.
Frank was struck at close range before a second deputy returned fire, striking Oetken multiple times. Minnehaha County State's Attorney Daniel Haggar charged Oetken with three counts of attempted first-degree murder of law enforcement and three counts of aggravated assault.
A memorial has been established at the Law Enforcement Center, 320 W. 4th St. in Sioux Falls, for those wishing to pay respects. Sheriff Mike Milstead and Sheriff-elect Josh Phillips called Frank's death "a significant loss" to their agency.
South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley announced the Division of Criminal Investigation is leading the inquiry into the shooting. Jackley promised a detailed report of findings will be released within 30 days.
