David Raya praises Unai Simón and downplays goalkeeping debate ahead of Spain's World Cup opener
On Saturday at Spain's training base in Chattanooga, goalkeeper David Raya addressed the competition for the starting spot, stating Spain is in "good hands" regardless of who coach Luis de la Fuente selects for the World Cup.
While Raya has earned three consecutive Premier League Golden Gloves at Arsenal, Athletic Club's Unai Simon is expected to start, with Barcelona's Joan Garcia also competing in a three-way battle for the position.
Despite spending the last 14 years in England, Raya dismissed suggestions of switching international allegiance, stating, "No, it has never gone through my head," as he has always felt Spanish.
Spain begins its World Cup campaign against Cape Verde in Atlanta on Monday, with de la Fuente likely sticking with Simon, who helped the team win the Nations League and Euros.
Raya emphasized the trio will "push each other to be better" during the tournament, prioritizing the collective effort to help Spain achieve its goal of winning a second World Cup star.
