Humanity's third interstellar object, 3I/ATLAS, is arriving now
It wasn’t all that long ago — less than 10 years ago, in fact — that all the objects we had ever seen in the Solar System originated from within the Solar System. The planets, moons, and dwarf planets all revolved around their parent bodies according to Newton’s law of gravity: in elliptical orbits. Asteroids and Kuiper belt objects largely orbited the Sun in belts (with centaurs in between them), while occasional gravitational interactions woul…
A team of astronomers, supported by Nasa, has captured the passage of comet 3I/ATLAS, an interstellar object that travels to more than 209,000 km/h. It is the third phenomenon of this type never recorded, which makes it an extraordinary finding for science A new comet of interstellar origin, named 3I/Atlas, has been located within the solar system. It is currently about 670 million kilometers from our star and does not pose a danger to the Earth.
A mysterious group of celestial objects, neither quite comets nor quite asteroids, intrigue the researchers by their unexplained movements. Their study could shed light on the origin of water on Earth.
What are Comets? - New Space Economy
In the vast expanse of our solar system, among the planets, moons, and asteroids, travel some of the most ancient and enigmatic objects known to science: comets. At their most fundamental, comets are small celestial bodies composed of a loose collection of ice, dust, and rocky particles that orbit the Sun.
