Daredevil dad’s daring second try to sail across Atlantic in tiny boat
The 52-year-old mariner is making a second attempt after his previous boat sank, and hopes to raise money for Cancer Research UK.
Andrew Bedwell, a sailor from Scarisbrick, Lancashire, has shipped his tiny aluminum yacht to Newfoundland, Canada, to attempt a second solo crossing of the Atlantic Ocean and break the world record for the smallest vessel.
Andrew's previous fiberglass vessel sank on the first day of his 2023 attempt after a bolt issue, prompting him to build a fractionally longer boat from tougher aluminum with a top speed of 3.7 knots.
Measuring around 1.2 meters long, the yacht must carry Andrew across a 1,900-mile route; he aims to beat the 105-day record set 30 years ago by current record holder Hugo Vihlen.
With only around 98 days of food onboard, Andrew will be harnessed in a seated position inside the tiny hull, with vacuum-packed calorie-dense snacks molded into the boat to insulate him from freezing waters.
Setting off on May 15, Andrew intends to raise money for Cancer Research UK while inspiring others, using a satellite phone to maintain contact with his wife and daughter throughout the voyage.
