Dangerous pass on B.C. highway caught on video ends with Alberta driver’s vehicle impounded
A dashcam witness helped police document the pass, and the driver faces more than $2,500 in fines and insurance costs, BCHP said.
- On April 28, 2026, BC Highway Patrol impounded a red Mazda hatchback after recording a 59-year-old Red Deer, Alta. driver traveling 163 km/h in a 100 zone on Highway 1 near Pritchard, B.C.
- A 58-year-old Kamloops man provided dashcam footage and witness statement to BCHP, reporting the same driver for performing an illegal pass on a double solid line.
- "We're grateful to the professional truck driver who did all the right things," Corporal Michael McLaughlin with BCHP said, noting speeding prevents drivers from processing what their eyes should see.
- Penalties for the Red Deer driver include a $483 excessive speed ticket and $109 for an illegal pass, totaling over $2,500 with three years of high-risk insurance premiums.
- Forced to make alternate travel arrangements, the Alberta man's vehicle remains under a seven-day impound following review of the "totality of the circumstances.
