Dangerous heat wave is building, will bring oppressive temperatures to much of the United States
Forecasters said temperatures could top 110 degrees and produce numerous daily, monthly and all-time records as the heat expands eastward.
The Weather Prediction Center forecasts widespread Major to Extreme HeatRisk across the Intermountain West and Plains through July 15, with temperatures exceeding 100°F and isolated highs reaching 109°F.
A strong heat dome formed by high pressure trapping hot air and blocking cooling winds is driving the event; AccuWeather meteorologist Chad Merrill notes it is one of the strongest systems to affect the Dakotas in 25 years.
In Bismarck, North Dakota, temperatures will surpass 100°F until Tuesday, while Las Vegas is expected to hit 111°F on Saturday. Overnight lows will remain around 81°F, offering minimal relief.
Officials advise residents to limit strenuous outdoor activity and stay hydrated, warning the heat could spike fire risk in dry areas including the Rockies. They urge against leaving children or pets unattended in vehicles.
Climate change is causing more intense heat waves, scientists say, while the current El Nino has an 81% chance of becoming "very strong" by fall. The National Weather Service predicts more than 90 local temperature records will be tied or broken.
