Danbury officials denounce masked group's 'Keep New England White' demonstration
Local leaders said the masked demonstrators aimed to intimidate residents and spread white supremacist rhetoric, as the group was described as neo-Nazi.
Masked individuals from the neo-Nazi group Northeast Action gathered outside Danbury Police Headquarters on Saturday night, chanting "White power" and displaying a banner reading "Keep New England White."
Northeast Action claimed the demonstration targeted a Sept. 2 Danbury City Council vote expanding police hiring to DACA recipients, though the group falsely labeled the policy as allowing "illegal immigrants" to serve.
The Counter Extremism Project described Northeast Action as a neo-Nazi organization active across nine states, conducting "flash-mob-style demonstrations" involving graffiti and banner drops to spread white supremacist ideology.
Danbury Mayor Roberto Alves and State Representative Raghib Allie-Brennan condemned the masked protesters, with Alves stating, "Let me be very clear: there is no place for hate, racism, or white supremacy in Danbury."
Tensions remain elevated in Danbury following August ICE operations that detained at least 70 people, while immigrant support groups like Greater Danbury Area Unites for Immigrants organize to protect residents from anti-immigrant rhetoric.
