Vikki Goodwin to Become First Woman in Texas History to Hold Lt. Gov. Office
Goodwin won after campaigning on schools, healthcare and affordability, while Patrick conceded following a wave of Democratic gains statewide.
On Tuesday, Democratic State Rep. Vikki Goodwin defeated Governor Dan Patrick, becoming the first Democrat to win Texas lieutenant governor in 27 years.
Patrick's defeat marks the end of his 12-year tenure, breaking the Republican Party's decades-long control of one of the most powerful offices in Texas government.
Initial results show Goodwin received 52 percent of the vote compared to 46 percent for Patrick. Her campaign gained momentum criticizing Patrick's push to ban THC products, which he called "dangerous."
Patrick conceded the race after midnight Wednesday. Goodwin, who previously represented Western Travis County, told supporters she intends to prioritize public education, affordability, and healthcare access during her four-year term.
As Goodwin prepares to preside over the Texas Senate, reports suggest Republican senators may consider rule changes to limit her authority. She takes office in January 2027.
