One dead, 36 injured in explosion at New York City shipyard
- On Friday, an explosion at a Staten Island shipyard killed one person and injured 36 others, according to the FDNY. Firefighting and EMS crews arrived within six minutes of initial reports.
- Fire Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore said multiple people reported smoke and two workers trapped in a 150-foot metal structure at the shipyard, formerly owned by the Bethlehem Steel Company.
- Five firefighters and rescue paramedics were searching the structure when a second blast occurred, causing further injuries, Chief of Department John Esposito said. "Confined spaces are very dangerous operations for any rescuers," Esposito noted.
- Dr. David Prezant reported a fire marshal is in critical but stable condition with a fractured skull. Prezant said the marshal is doing "very well" but will be monitored for 24 hours to prevent brain swelling.
- New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani called the incident a "complex, fast-developing emergency situation" with more than 200 firefighters still at the scene Friday night. A comprehensive investigation into the cause will begin as soon as possible.
