Netflix’s New ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ Series Heads Into Gothic Horror World
- Netflix is developing a live-action series based on Ravenloft, the gothic horror setting from Dungeons & Dragons, with screenwriter John August and executive producer Alfonso Cuarón leading the project centered on vampire Darklord Strahd von Zarovich.
- The project succeeds a canceled Forgotten Realms adaptation that Netflix scrapped after announcing it in 2025 with writer Drew Crevello and executive producer Shawn Levy, positioning Ravenloft as its replacement.
- First introduced in 1983 by Tracy and Laura Hickman, Ravenloft has featured in over 100 novels, RPGs, and video games; August brings gothic credentials from Tim Burton films including Corpse Bride and Frankenweenie.
- Cuarón's involvement marks his Netflix return eight years after Roma, which earned 10 Oscar nominations including Best Picture and wins for Best Director and Best Cinematography, aligning with Hasbro's five-year push for live-action D&D adaptations.
- Ravenloft joins Netflix projects like Wednesday and Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein amid rising supernatural gothic momentum; both Ravenloft and Strahd appeared in Stranger Things' finale, highlighting Dungeons & Dragons' expanding entertainment footprint.
