Cyclist, 18, dead in hit-and-run; Montreal police search for driver

The watchdog assigned six investigators after early reports said an unmarked provincial police cruiser tried to stop the driver before the fatal collision.

  • On Friday, an 18-year-old cyclist died in Montreal's Ahuntsic-Cartierville borough after being struck by a vehicle fleeing from a Sûreté du Québec patrol car at the intersection of Henri-Bourassa Boulevard and Jeanne-Mance Street.
  • According to the Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes , an unmarked SQ patrol car attempted to intercept the vehicle after officers observed a "possible violation" of road safety laws, prompting the driver to flee.
  • Witnesses reported the car sped southbound on Jeanne-Mance Street, crossing all lanes of Henri-Bourassa Boulevard where the speed limit is 30 km/h; the driver abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot.
  • The BEI has assigned six investigators to examine the police intervention, while the Montreal police launched a parallel criminal investigation with the SPVM providing support services to the independent agency.
  • Police are currently searching for the driver who fled the scene, and the BEI is requesting that any witnesses contact the agency through its website to assist with the ongoing investigation.
