- Wednesday, CVS Health completed purchases of hundreds of former Rite Aid prescription files and began operating 63 former Rite Aid and Bartell Drugs locations in Idaho, Oregon and Washington.
- Facing heavy debt and annual losses, Rite Aid filed for bankruptcy in October 2023 and said in May it would sell substantially all assets after shrinking from more than 4,000 to around 1,200 stores.
- Transferring prescription files from 626 pharmacies across 15 states, CVS Pharmacy hired more than 3,500 former colleagues to serve more than nine million former Rite Aid and Bartell Drugs patients.
- The last asset transactions closed on September 30 after a less than four-month process, with CVS saying preserving convenience and prescription access guided store and file purchases.
- CVS's large PBM and insurance reach position it to absorb former Rite Aid patients, with approximately 9,000 retail pharmacy locations and nearly 27 million people covered by Aetna as of June 30, 2025.
