Surfer Suspended over Alleged Sexual Assault of Aussie Teen
The league removed the unnamed competitor from rankings and events while French Polynesian police handle the allegations, officials said.
The World Surf League provisionally suspended Championship Tour competitor Alan Cleland Jnr on Sunday following allegations of a "deeply serious nature" involving his conduct in Tahiti.
These allegations stem from a private gathering in French Polynesia during the Championship Tour's seventh stop between August 8 and August 18, 2026, unaffiliated with the competition.
Cleland, 24, who represented Mexico at the 2024 Olympic Games, was removed from WSL competition rankings and his major sponsor Quicksilver's website following the suspension.
Spokespeople for NSW Police and the Australian Federal Police said local authorities in French Polynesia are handling the matter, though French Polynesian police cannot confirm an active investigation.
Three other alleged perpetrators involved in the gathering are not affiliated with the league, as the WSL Discipline Committee continues offering assistance to relevant authorities.
The athlete, ninth place in Paris 2024, is suspended from the WSL circuit on charges of sexual assault against a teenager. His former partner, the surfer Noah Klapp, also accuses him of physical, sexual and psychological violence.
