CRTC gives Bell and Telus until Wednesday to drop fees or risk compliance actions
The regulator says Bell’s $40 device handling charge and Telus’s $15 SIM card fee may breach new rules banning extra plan charges.
The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission gave Bell and Telus until Wednesday to drop contested fees or face regulatory action, threatening to pursue compliance measures if the companies do not comply.
New CRTC rules implemented Friday banned telecoms from charging extra fees to activate or change cell plans, prompting the regulator to warn that Bell and Telus' newly introduced charges appeared to violate these regulations.
Bell introduced a $40 device handling fee while Telus implemented a $15 fee for SIM cards; both companies argue these charges cover optional product purchases rather than administrative services banned under the new rules.
Matt Hatfield, executive director of the advocacy group OpenMedia, called the fees a 'shady used-car dealer type thing,' while the CRTC warns it will 'consider all available compliance options' if disputes remain unresolved.
The CRTC's review into each matter remains ongoing, though Hatfield cautioned that formal enforcement can be lengthy; he urged regulators to act quickly, noting 'CRTC decisions take a very long time' to benefit customers.
The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has again issued warnings to Bell Canada and Telus regarding recently introduced charges.
