Crosscountry-Diggins' final Games off to rocky start after early skiathlon crash
On Saturday, Jessie Diggins finished eighth in the 10km + 10km skiathlon with a time of 56:06.3, while Frida Karlsson of Sweden won gold in 53:45.2.
An early crash on a downhill turn caused traffic that set Diggins back, and wet, energy-draining soft snow plus no practice run complicated her recovery.
The skiathlon begins in classic technique before a midrace switch to freestyle, and Jessie Diggins returned after her tumble to surge late, saying she was "really really proud of my skate half."
She will return Tuesday for the women's cross-country skiing sprint classic, and Diggins, 34, announced plans to retire at season's end; her result continued her top-10 streak.
Nordic nations took top honors, reinforcing Sweden and Norway's strength as Norway became the winningest nation in women's Olympic cross-country at Milan Cortina with an equalized 20km distance.
