Crocodile handler dies a day after being attacked at Papua New Guinea wildlife park

Bystanders and police tried to free the handler, and Adventure Park has closed after the attack, officials said.

  • On Saturday afternoon, a worker died after a crocodile attacked him at Adventure Park in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. The reptile mauled the handler while he was inside the animal exhibit.
  • Eyewitness Gibson John told the ABC the man was feeding the crocodile chicken at the fence when it attacked. The animal dragged him into the pool, trapping his legs in its jaws for over an hour.
  • Bystanders attempted to support the handler from the pool's edge and offered a metal pole through the fence. Police arrived and shot the crocodile to free him before John Ambulance transported him to 3 Mile General Hospital.
  • Despite being rushed to 3 Mile Hospital, the man died from his injuries on Sunday morning at 7am. Mr John stated, "I couldn't believe what I saw."
  • Adventure Park closed until further notice following the fatality. The worker, from Western Islands in northern Papua New Guinea, was performing his duties when the attack occurred.
