Croc-habitat gets green light for 2032 Olympic rowing
- On Thursday, Queensland Premier David Crisafulli announced international governing bodies approved Rockhampton's Fitzroy River as the official rowing and canoe sprint venue for the 2032 Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games.
- World Rowing and Paddle Worldwide endorsed the site after intense scrutiny regarding fairness and safety concerns. World Rowing president Jean-Christophe Rolland said the assessment confirmed the river could provide "fair competition conditions" for Olympic and Paralympic events.
- The 2.7 kilometres long course passed assessment "with flying colours" by "renowned marine engineering experts," while the Fitzroy Barrage was cited as a "secret weapon." The facility accommodates a standard 2000-metre rowing race with full width for eight lanes.
- Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie told parliament the Games Independent Infrastructure and Coordination Authority's project validation report process remains ongoing. GIICA will deliver findings in the coming months with concept design already 80 per cent complete.
- Rockhampton Mayor Tony Williams said the endorsement provides certainty for athletes and the community. The facility will unlock long-term economic and social benefits for Central Queensland as it moves toward hosting the 2032 Games.
