Criminal investigation of Alaska Senate race is ‘ongoing,’ U.S. Attorney says
The lawsuit says two Dan Sullivans on the ballot could confuse voters and alter the Senate result, with control of the chamber at stake.
- On Friday, Judge Sharon Gleason kept a fast track for a DOJ lawsuit seeking to delay Alaska's Senate election certification due to potential voter confusion over two Dan Sullivans on the ballot.
- The legal challenge stems from concerns that voter confusion between Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan and another candidate with his name could influence the race against Democrat Mary Peltola.
- Alaska election officials and the Peltola campaign asked Gleason to dismiss the case, arguing the DOJ lacks legal authority to block certification based on shared candidate names.
- Judge Gleason ordered the DOJ to respond by 1 p.m. Alaska Time Friday to dismissal motions, with a final ruling possible before Election Day on Tuesday.
- The winner of this Alaska Senate race could determine which party holds a majority in the Senate, where Republicans currently control 53 seats in the 100-member chamber.
