Charity Warns Domestic Abuse Spikes During World Cup
Crimestoppers says domestic abuse rises around major matches, with research showing incidents increase 38% when England loses, 26% when it wins.
Crimestoppers launched a national campaign warning that major football tournaments can increase domestic abuse, highlighting hidden harms that escalate behind closed doors during high-profile matches.
Research found that incidents of domestic abuse increase by 38 per cent when England loses, rise by 26 per cent when they win, and remain 11 per cent higher the following day regardless of result.
Warning signs of domestic abuse include controlling or jealous behaviour, put-downs in front of others, visible injuries, and withdrawal from friends and family or changes in mood such as anxiety or depression.
Annabelle Goodenough, domestic abuse lead for Crimestoppers, said: "Football should bring people together, but for some, major tournaments can be a time of increased fear and harm." The charity guarantees anonymity for all reports.
