Crews Battle Brush Fire In Oakland Hills Above UC Berkeley
Fire crews say the blaze has damaged at least one home and spread to 2-3 acres as agencies work to contain it.
A brush fire ignited in the Berkeley Hills near Panoramic Way on Tuesday, prompting crews from Berkeley Fire, Oakland Fire, and Cal Fire to respond to the blaze.
The fire occurred as residents marked 35 years since the catastrophic 1991 Oakland Hills firestorm, which caused $1.5 billion in damage; current winds differ from that historic event.
Oakland Fire Department spokesperson Michael Hunt reported the blaze damaged at least one home and spanned 2-3 acres of vegetation, with crews halting forward progress by 1:15 p.m.
Helicopters from the East Bay Regional Parks District were deployed to drop water on flames visible from Rockridge, while officials confirmed no immediate reports of injuries.
Berkeley Police and city officials continue advising residents to avoid the area while crews work to extinguish the fire, though no evacuations have been ordered as the cause remains under investigation.
