The Canada Revenue Agency has recouped $4 billion and is seeking repayment of $10 billion in ineligible COVID-19 benefits distributed during the pandemic.
- The Canada Revenue Agency said $10 billion remains outstanding after recouping about $4 billion from $84 billion in COVID-19 benefits, with $14 billion flagged as ineligible.
- Mostly via CERB and CRB, the CRA found many recipients failed to meet income or eligibility thresholds, including minimum net earnings of $5,000, and began notifying repayment obligations in 2022.
- Patrick Masse says he applied in good faith, received a CRA letter declaring him ineligible, and remains liable for about $27,000 despite the agency agreeing he was entitled to some money in early 2024.
- Brian Mantin warns `If you owe money to the government, there's no statute of limitations` as the Canada Revenue Agency uses freezes and garnishes, saying, `Hey, before the person gets their wages, take 30 per cent off the top`.
- As of Nov. 30, the CRA said it processed about $621 million in reversals for about 55,000 individuals, while Franco Terrazzano, Canadian Taxpayers Federation, said administrators should be held accountable.
