Carney, Smith join forces at Alberta brewery to stump for a united Canada
Carney said Alberta faces global threats and unprecedented growth as voters weigh separation and other ballot questions in Monday’s referendum.
Prime Minister Mark Carney and Premier Danielle Smith urged Albertans to vote to stay in Canada during a joint appearance in Red Deer, Alta., ahead of Monday's referendum.
Voters face 10 questions on the ballot, including whether Alberta should remain in Canada or hold a binding separation referendum, alongside Smith's proposals for increased control over immigration and constitutional powers.
Carney called a vote against Canada "a dangerous bluff" at a Calgary rally, while Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre argued in Calgary that quitting is not the solution.
Although Carney and Smith share a united Canada stance, the prime minister urged Albertans to reject the other nine ballot questions, a position the premier intends to challenge.
Carney stated the referendum comes as global forces threaten Canada, yet argued Alberta is poised for "unprecedented growth" within a spirit of co-operative federalism.
