Canada Informed of 26 Additional Hantavirus Contacts, Says Top Doctor
Public health officials say 9 people are high-risk and isolating, while 26 others are being monitored after shared flights with a confirmed case.
On Thursday, May 14, 2026, Canada's Chief Public Health Officer, Dr. Joss Reimer, announced 26 Canadians are being monitored for hantavirus symptoms after sharing flights with confirmed cases but were not close contacts.
Separately, nine individuals classified as high-risk exposure cases are currently self-isolating in Alberta, British Columbia, and Ontario after exposure on the MV Hondius luxury cruise ship or close contact with infected travelers.
Although European officials deemed the 26 passengers at 'no risk,' Reimer stated Canada is taking a 'precautionary approach' by classifying them as minimal or low risk. No one in Canada has shown symptoms.
Reimer reiterated that the "overall risk to the general population" remains low, while provincial and territorial public health agencies may direct further isolation measures following detailed risk assessments.
Officials do not expect further spread of the virus within Canada, and the government maintains a serious commitment to supporting the health of Canadians as monitoring continues.
