3,156-Pound Pumpkin Grown in Rhode Island Is Inspected for Possible World Record
The pumpkin would be the first verified gourd over 3,000 pounds if Guinness World Records confirms the weigh-in, officials said.
On Saturday, Ron Wallace of Coventry, Rhode Island, set a potential world record at the Southern New England Giant Pumpkin Weigh-Off with a 3,156-pound squash, the first recorded pumpkin to exceed 3,000 pounds.
Meanwhile, horticulture teacher Travis Gienger of Anoka, Minnesota, won the 53rd World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off in Half Moon Bay, California, for the fifth time with his 2,389-pound pumpkin named Rocky.
After driving 35 hours to transport his pumpkin, Gienger earned $21,501 in prize money, calculated at $9 per pound. Rocky fell far short of Wallace's potential record weight.
Competition organizer Ronan Fowler praised Gienger's ability to grow massive pumpkins despite 30-degree weather. Gienger suggests that competing seriously now requires climate-controlled environments to protect gourds.
Wallace's 3,156-pound pumpkin awaits official certification by Guinness World Records, which currently lists a 2,857-pound squash as the record holder. If verified, his entry would beat the previous record by nearly 300 pounds.
A producer of Rhode Island pumpkins seems to have broken the world record thanks to a huge specimen that would exceed by more than 130 kilos (300 pounds) the current brand.
