Almost 5,000 Evacuated in City of London Due to Gas Leak
Crews set up a 200-meter cordon and warned people not to smoke as buses were diverted and nearby offices emptied.
At 10:55 BST, the London Fire Brigade responded to Old Broad Street after discovering a ruptured six-inch gas main at a six-storey office building, prompting the evacuation of roughly 4,700 people from the surrounding area.
Firefighters established a 200m cordon between Threadneedle Street and London Wall to secure the site, as the rupture occurred at a six-storey office block requiring widespread precautionary evacuation of nearby buildings.
Several bus routes, including 21, 43, 100, 141, and 153, are on diversion, while traffic authorities closed the A1211 Wormwood Street in both directions between A10 Bishopsgate and London Wall.
Two fire engines from Dowgate and Shadwell stations, along with a Fire Rescue Unit from Bethnal Green, remain at the scene managing the emergency response.
Office workers displaced by the evacuation have been advised not to smoke near the site while emergency crews continue monitoring the ruptured main to ensure safety in the City.
