Wanderers suffered early setbacks when striker Awan Lual sustained a left hamstring injury within 10 minutes, while defender Alex Gersbach was also substituted in the 80th minute with a hamstring injury.
A crowd of 30,103 watched as Sydney recruits Oriola Sunday and James Overy provided rare highlights, with Sunday electrifying the stadium with a daring 66th-minute run down the corridor.
Sydney head coach Patrick Kisnorbo and Talay admitted the match was bogged down by strategy, with Talay noting, "The derby's not always going to be silky football. It's always going to be a bit chaotic.
