Court to deliver judgment in suit against Yahaya Bello's senatorial candidacy Nov 19
The plaintiff wants the court to void Bello’s primary win and order APC to recognize him as the nominee after Bello polled 72,399 votes, party records show.
- On Monday, Judge Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court in Abuja set November 19 for judgment in a suit challenging former Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello's nomination as the All Progressives Congress senatorial candidate for Kogi Central.
- Senatorial aspirant Momoh Yusuf Obaro initiated the legal challenge, alleging he was the rightful winner of the May 18 primary election. Obaro claims Bello voluntarily withdrew from the contest, a point Bello and the APC vehemently deny.
- Results showed Bello received 72,399 votes, while Ibrahim Yakubu Adoke and Obaro trailed with 319 and 188 votes respectively. While an internal document initially labeled Bello as "not cleared," the party later included him on the list of eligible aspirants.
- During Monday's session, defense counsel for the APC, the Independent National Electoral Commission , and Bello urged the court to dismiss the suit. Obaro's legal team maintained their request for the court to declare him the validly nominated candidate.
- Separate criminal cases involving alleged financial misconduct by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission continue against Bello. Despite these ongoing trials regarding his tenure as governor, he remains the APC's nominee for the senatorial seat.
