San Diego County Steps in with Arts Grants Amid Federal and City Cuts
The plan would fund artist grants, creative spaces and a binational economy program, with $2.75 million proposed for ongoing arts support.
- On Wednesday, San Diego County Supervisors Terra Lawson-Remer and Monica Montgomery Steppe unveiled a $2.75 million arts initiative, with the board scheduled to vote on the proposal May 5.
- The proposal arrives as the city of San Diego considers slashing arts funding by nearly $12 million in its Fiscal Year 2027 budget, while federal grants for local arts programs have begun to dry up.
- Allocations include $2.25 million in ongoing annual investments for diverse programs, ranging from artist grants to a $500,000 investment in the Black Arts and Culture District located in Encanto.
- Bob Lehman, executive director of San Diego ART Matters, called the investment "long-overdue," saying it "transforms passion into purposeful, strategic action" for the region's creative economy.
- Supervisors also aim to establish the county as a designated Local Arts Agency through the California Arts Council, expanding advocacy efforts to stabilize support for artists.
