WHO Calls for Travel Restrictions on Ebola-Affected Countries to Be Lifted, Days After Canada's Comes in Effect
WHO says blanket travel bans are disrupting supply chains and slowing the Ebola response as the outbreak has topped 340 confirmed cases in Congo.
The World Health Organization is calling on countries to remove travel restrictions recently imposed on Ebola-affected nations, warning such measures are implemented out of fear and "have no basis in science."
An outbreak of the Bundibugyo virus, a rare type of Ebola with no licensed vaccine, has ballooned in the DRC and spread to neighboring Uganda.
There have been more than 340 confirmed cases in the DRC, including 60 deaths, while Uganda has 15 confirmed cases including one death, health officials said Tuesday.
Canada, the United States, and Mexico recently announced aligned public health measures, including a 90-day pause on visa applications for travelers from the DRC, Uganda, and South Sudan.
Canadian officials also initiated a mandatory 21-day self-isolation period for travelers from affected regions, suggesting these steps protect the "strength and stability of Canada.
