UK Coffee Chain Brings Back Discontinued British Treat After 5 Years Away From Menus
The chain says 71% of Britons prefer jam first, and the new Afternoon Bundle starts at £6.49 at selected stores.
Costa Coffee has reintroduced scones to menus after 5 years, launching a new "50/50" treat topped with a balanced swirl of both jam and cream at more than 1,000 locations.
Following a break that started during the Covid-19 pandemic, the chain returned to address the long-standing debate where 71% of Brits prefer the Cornish jam-first method, while 29% prefer cream first.
The new Afternoon Bundle includes a regular drink and scone for £6.49; research found 55% rhyme "scone" with "gone" compared to 45% favoring "bone."
Councillor Brian Stoyel, mayor of Saltash near the Devon–Cornwall border, tasted the treat and called it "proof that sometimes bringing people together is even better than settling the argument."
Andrea Stewart, global head of food at Costa Coffee, said the company wanted to create a "playful compromise" that celebrates both jam-first and cream-first traditions for a limited time.
