Coroner Sets Inquest Hearings Into Dezi Freeman, Police Deaths
The hearings will examine the killings, the seven-month manhunt and the child abuse allegations that prompted the warrant, officials said.
State Coroner Liberty Sanger began directions hearings today at the Coroners Court into the deaths of police officers Neal Thompson and Vadim de Waart-Hottart, and the man who killed them, Dezi Freeman.
In August 2025, officers served a search warrant at Freeman's Victorian High Country home in Porepunkah regarding alleged child sexual abuse, during which Freeman killed Thompson and de Waart-Hottart.
Freeman led police on a seven-month manhunt, which ended on March 30 when he died after being shot by police at a remote property in Thologolong, near Walwa on the Victoria-NSW border.
Coroner Sanger will determine the scope and witnesses for the inquests to establish how the three died and identify safety recommendations, with forensic criminologist Claire Ferguson emphasizing the need for scene reconstruction.
Investigators continue exploring whether Freeman received assistance during his 216 days evading police, while Police Commissioner Mike Bush has maintained the final shooting was justified.
