Cooley rebounds to lead Flames to gritty 3-2 win over Hurricanes
Morgan Frost scored the go-ahead power-play goal and Cooley stopped every third-period shot as Calgary held off Carolina.
On Sunday, the Calgary Flames defeated the defending Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes 3-2, snapping the Hurricanes' seven-game winning streak. Goaltender Devin Cooley made 34 stops in his first start since a blowout loss to the Colorado Avalanche.
Following a 10-day wait, Cooley sought redemption after surrendering seven goals to Colorado. He prioritized playing smarter, stating he tried to "conserve as much energy and just play a lot smarter than a lot harder."
Yegor Sharangovich scored the game-winner at 15:32 of the third period on a one-timer set up by Morgan Frost. Calgary outshot Carolina 14-11 in the final frame, with coach Huska calling Cooley "awesome" after the victory.
Defenceman Zayne Parekh praised Cooley, saying "He was great," and noted the goaltender's return to form. Cooley emphasized staying calm, describing his approach as letting his "eyes do all the work instead of my body."
The Calgary Flames host the Minnesota Wild on Thursday. This victory halts a difficult stretch, with Cooley demonstrating the reliability the team requires in net after recent scrutiny.
