Construction Of Military Data Center On Maui Alarms Residents
The lab will remotely operate up to seven proposed telescopes and consolidate Space Force operations from four Maui facilities into one.
Construction of the Secure Integration Support Laboratory, a nearly $100 million facility in South Maui, is underway to support seven proposed telescopes on Haleakalā's 10,000-foot summit. The project consolidates the Space Force 15th Space Surveillance Squadron's operations into one location.
By separating the lab and telescope projects, federal officials bypassed rigorous environmental impact reviews. Hina Kneubuhl, an organizer with Protect Haleakalā, argues this segmentation obscures cumulative environmental and cultural impacts on Maui.
The 56,000-square-foot facility includes a high-performance data center and three 20,000-gallon diesel tanks for backup power. The Draft Environmental Assessment notes "short-term minor adverse effects on potable water use," though long-term consumption projections remain unavailable.
Citing a 720-gallon diesel spill at the Maui Space Surveillance Complex on Haleakalā in January 2023, residents expressed concerns about fuel storage. Many fear the facility could make the island a target for foreign adversaries amid expanding space-based warfare.
Expected to be completed early next year, the lab will remotely operate seven proposed telescopes from the Haleakalā summit. As public resistance grows, the facility faces ongoing scrutiny regarding its resource demands and role in the Air Force's expanding space surveillance capabilities.
