Why is Berlin failing to build more bike lanes?
Berlin had millions available for cycling projects last year but only spent a fraction of its budget. With less than six percent of a planned bike network completed since 2017, here’s how local politics have put the brakes on a more bikeable capital.
Although more bicycle parking spaces are being created in Berlin, the development of cycle paths is hardly progressing. Investments have also fallen significantly.
The new "Senate's Progress Report" on cycling shows a brake track that is getting longer and longer. However, there are big differences between the districts.
The cycle path expansion in Berlin has not been in progress for years. Only about 21 kilometres of route were added in 2025. Available funds for the expansion remained large.
