Deaths in Congo’s fast-moving Ebola outbreak top 3,000, spread of disease shows no signs of slowing
Health officials say 830 people are in treatment or isolation as clinical trials and vaccination efforts continue against the outbreak.
- In the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ebola cases have surged to 6186, with health authorities reporting more than 3000 deaths since the outbreak was officially declared in mid-May.
- Experts believe the first infections occurred undetected in February, while the virus spreads through physical contact and bodily fluids with a 48.6 per cent fatality rate, meaning almost one in two patients die.
- Clinical trials for two antiviral treatments have been under way since early July, while 830 people remain in isolation or treatment and 1409 patients have recovered.
- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that "International attention, political focus and resources are still lagging behind the reality," adding the world must overcome the "virus of indifference."
- Targeting the Bundibugyo strain, Congolese authorities have rolled out a vaccination campaign for frontline health workers in the northeastern province of Ituri, hoping the vaccine provides protection against the current outbreak.
