Congolese Forces Retake Uvira After M23 Withdrawal
M23 withdrew from Uvira as a trust-building step amid ongoing clashes; over 1,500 killed and 300,000 displaced, Congolese forces secured city with militia support.
- On Monday, FARDC spokesman Mak Hazukay announced the Congolese army had fully recaptured Uvira, South Kivu province.
- After an early December offensive, M23 seized Uvira, a lakeside city of several hundred thousand on the Burundi border, and on December 17 said it was pulling troops in response to a US request.
- On Sunday morning, wazalendo forces entered southern Uvira districts, followed by Congolese special forces after Saturday troop movements, and Hazukay said, `About 20 looting civilians were arrested` amid looting.
- The FARDC said it continues deployments in Uvira and its surroundings to consolidate positions, while South Kivu officials warned M23 fighters positioned on the heights above Uvira to threaten the city.
- On Thursday, M23 declared it would place Uvira, a strategic lakeside city on the Burundi border seized in early December, "under the full and entire responsibility of the international community.
