Congo death toll hits 77 after extreme weather brings floods and sinks boats, 107 remain missing
At least 77 people have lost their lives due to floods and boat incidents in the Congo, including 48 victims recovered after three vessels capsized on Lake Tumba last Wednesday.
The boat accident resulted from bad weather during unusually heavy rains, with the vessels departing from an unauthorized port and many passengers missing, according to Vice Prime Minister Jacquemain Shabani.
Kinshasa experienced floods and landslides at the weekend caused by 90 millimeters of rainfall, damaging infrastructure, submerging houses, and affecting about a third of the city’s population nearing 18 million.
Lake Commissioner Gabriel Ifulu Bongolomba reported about 45 deaths from the boat sinking, while a civil society group claimed around 200 people were on overloaded vessels; survivors feared arrest for unauthorized navigation.
The government is coordinating humanitarian response, rebuilding damaged structures, covering funeral costs, enhancing disaster prevention, and urging locals to increase disaster awareness amid ongoing heavy rains.
