Confusion around postgraduate work permit language resulting in rejections
The federal government rejected some permits after applicants missed a language test requirement that has been posted since November 2024, officials said.
International graduates are facing Postgraduate Work Permit rejections because they failed to include language test results in their applications, according to reports published on May 16, 2026.
Applicants report that the application portal lacks a dedicated upload field for language test results, making the requirement difficult to identify during the submission process.
Between November 1, 2025, and December 31, 2025, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada received more than 302,000 PGWP applications; 945 were rejected for language-related reasons.
Immigration Minister Lena Diab's office acknowledged that applicants found the paperwork confusing and said a dedicated submission field is under development as part of broader IT changes.
Lukas Troni, a University of British Columbia graduate, awaits reconsideration after his initial permit denial, while the federal government reviews the process for further improvements.
