Committee calls for reversal of agricultural research centre closures
The committee says the closures could affect more than 100 workers at one Alberta site and weaken research on food security and climate change.
On Tuesday, a House of Commons committee recommended the federal government halt its decision to close agricultural research centres and experimental farm sites across Canada.
Earlier this year, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada announced plans to close research centres and satellite farms as Ottawa attempts to trim the public service by about 40,000 jobs.
The Lacombe Research and Development Centre in Alberta employs more than 100 people and focuses on crop sciences and livestock research; the Nappan Experimental Farm in Nova Scotia also faces closure.
Workers face potential layoffs starting May 23, prompting the union representing staff to urge The House to stop the closures immediately and prevent lasting harm to employees and food security.
Ottawa aims to reduce program spending by about $60 billion over five years, though officials noted in January that the wind-down of research operations could take up to 12 months.
A House of Commons committee recommends that the government reconsider its decision to close agricultural research centres and experimental farms across Canada as part of its cost reduction program.
