Commanders Hire Former NFL Head Coach Steve Wilks to Defensive Staff, AP Source Says
Steve Wilks will help Washington’s defensive coaches with game planning, but he will not travel with the team on game days, reporters said.
- On Wednesday, the Washington Commanders announced the hiring of Steve Wilks as a part-time assistant coach to support the defensive staff with game planning.
- Wilks brings significant experience, having served as head coach of the Arizona Cardinals in 2018 and interim head coach of the Carolina Panthers in 2022, plus defensive coordinator roles for the New York Jets and San Francisco 49ers.
- Head coach Dan Quinn and defensive coordinator Daronte Jones orchestrated the move last month, with Wilks officially beginning his game-planning duties last week.
- The team's 1-4-1 record did not prompt this appointment, reports indicate, nor does the move impact Jones' status as defensive coordinator.
- Wilks will assist with game planning but won't be with the team on game days, creating an unusual arrangement where he departs after midweek practice sessions.
